Life changing secret

Financial freedom, fixed marriages, and weight loss – boy that must be some secret! Have you caught wind of the latest book that Oprah is promoting? Check out this link to her site, Oprah.com.

After you get done reading that, I think you’ll enjoy this editorial a great deal more.

So having familiarized yourself with “the secret”, what do you think? Does positive thinking really produce results? Here are some quotes from Michael Shermer’s June 2007 article in Scientific-American magazine that I find, if anything, amusing. The text in quotes is his quotation of “shiny, happy people [assuring] viewers that The Secret is grounded in science”. The bold text is his response.

“It has been proven scientifically that a positive thought is hundreds of times more powerful than a negative thought.” No, it hasn’t.

“Our physiology creates disease to give us feedback, to let us know we have an imbalanced perspective, and we’re not loving and we’re not grateful.” Those ungrateful cancer patients.

“You’ve got enough power in your body to illuminate a whole city for nearly a week.” Sure, if you convert your body’s hydrogen into energy through nuclear fission.

I mean, come on Oprah, how much are you being paid to peddle this craziness. I’m all about positive thinking since I do think it has merit. But can’t we just leave it as a tool for self-motivation? Why distort good science with what truly looks like a marketing scheme aimed to make someone a lot of money?

Go ahead, think positive thoughts, but know that you might actually have to work hard to realize the changes you want in your life. Picturing yourself exercising and enjoying it will not replace the sweat and muscle ache of what it truly takes to lose weight. Thinking positively about financial freedom, in my experience, does nothing more than encourage people to live beyond their means.

Give me a break Oprah! You didn’t get where you are solely by “thinking happy thoughts”…

  1. WHAT!!!!!??????
Yea, I’ve heard about the power of positive thinking. It helps some people get thru their day, but SCIENTIFIC??? Don’t think so.
Failure – or lack of success, is what you let happen.
Success, is what you MAKE happen.
You can sit and think happy all day, but unless you get off your ass and work hard, it ain’t gonna happen.
