Politician Profiles and Issues

Some more updates over at Open:Source:Polity

I finished building all of the politician profiles for the 2008 Presidential candidates – nothing fancy, just the basics. You’ll notice, however, at the bottom of each profile is a “Latest news for this candidate” section. I accomplished this using the googleNewsBar extension for MediaWiki. Pretty cool.

If you do end up using this extension for anything, note that you will need an API key from Google. Also, instead of putting the said “required_once” line in your localsettings.php, use “include” instead. Also, be wary of extra lines (blank ones) at the beginning or end of your googleNewsBarExtension.php as these will generate weird and annoying header errors on all site pages. Other than that, works like a charm. Check one out

Also, I started working on the “Issues” page. I built this page using all of the “issues” listed on the Presidential candidate’s websites. Talk about a lot of stuff! Next step will be to start categorizing all of this stuff. Then I’m thinking that a page for each should be OK, I’m just not sure yet how I’m going to intertwine all of the candidates and eventually different committees and PAC’s, but I’m confident that it will all work out.

It’s coming along! You should come by and contribute!
